As the countdown to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games enters a new phase, LA28 has announced one of the most anticipated milestones in its planning process: the opening of applications to join the volunteer team that will help make both events possible. Beginning on July 14, 2026, exactly two years before the Olympic Opening Ceremony, people from around the world will be able to submit their applications to become part of a unique experience at the world’s largest sporting stage.
The initiative aims to recruit approximately 60,000 volunteers to support Games operations across venues in Los Angeles and other host cities. Beyond competitions and records, the program seeks to bring together thousands of people willing to become the human face of the event, assisting athletes, spectators, and delegations while helping to showcase the Olympic and Paralympic spirit both inside and outside the competition venues.
The Roles That Will Help the Games Run Behind the Scenes
Volunteers will take on a wide range of responsibilities throughout the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Their duties will include welcoming and guiding spectators, supporting athletes and teams, assisting with venue operations, and helping visitors from around the world navigate the Games experience. There will also be specialized opportunities for individuals with medical expertise, translation skills, and other qualifications essential to the successful delivery of the events.
While most volunteer opportunities will be based in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, positions will also be available in other cities hosting Olympic events, including Oklahoma City, New York City, Columbus, Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose, and San Diego. Selected volunteers will be expected to complete a minimum of ten shifts during the Olympic volunteer period, running from March to August 2028, or during the Paralympic volunteer period, scheduled from August to September of the same year.
The Importance of Volunteers Beyond Competition
The significance of volunteers extends far beyond operational support. Throughout Olympic history, they have been the silent protagonists of the Games, responsible for creating many of the experiences that athletes, fans, media representatives, and guests remember long after the competitions have ended. Since 2025, LA28 has organized volunteer initiatives across Southern California, allowing people to participate even before the Games begin. These activities include beach, street, and trail cleanups, habitat restoration projects, and food-packing campaigns for people in need. With more than 25 events already completed, the program aims to ensure that the volunteer experience extends beyond a few weeks of competition, creating a lasting impact on the communities that will host the Games.
