The Silverstone University Technical College (UTC), located next to the iconic Silverstone circuit, has established itself as a bridge between academic education and the leading teams in motorsport’s top category.
The success of this model is reflected in the stories of Kian Brown and Savannah Morgan, who joined Formula 1-related teams just one year after graduating. Brown is now building his career in composite materials machining at Mercedes, while Morgan works as an advanced digital machining apprentice at Cadillac. Together, they represent a generation of students turning their passion for engineering into a profession.
Training designed to meet the needs of motorsport
Since its creation in 2013, the Silverstone UTC has been designed to address a specific industry need: to train highly specialized professionals capable of quickly entering the motorsport industry. Located in Britain’s renowned “Motorsport Valley,” home to eight Formula 1 teams, the school offers students aged 14 to 18 a learning environment unlike that of a traditional school. Its facilities include industrial-grade machinery, CNC equipment, welding workshops, and computer-aided design laboratories that replicate real-world working conditions.
Its close partnerships with Aston Martin, Red Bull, and Haas allow students to work on real projects, complete industry placements during their studies, and build direct connections with potential employers. This close relationship with the industry has made the school an important part of addressing one of British motorsport’s biggest challenges: the shortage of skilled professionals. At a time when Formula 1 contributes billions of pounds to the United Kingdom’s economy and employs tens of thousands of people, specialized technical education has become a strategic resource for sustaining the sport’s continued growth.

For students at Silverstone, learning extends far beyond the classroom. Savannah Morgan explains that weekly work placements and networking events helped her discover which branch of engineering truly inspired her while also giving her the opportunity to meet professionals from teams such as McLaren and Williams. Inspired by the career of Lewis Hamilton, she found at the UTC a place where she could combine her passion for mathematics and physics with hands-on experience, preparing for a career in a field that has historically lacked diversity.
Kian Brown shares a similar story. Having dreamed of working in Formula 1 from an early age, he chose Silverstone because he wanted an education that combined theory and practical experience. For him, learning from teachers with direct industry backgrounds made a decisive difference compared to more traditional educational models. That commitment is also reflected in the many students who relocate or travel long distances to attend the school, attracted by an educational project that, according to principal Angela Murphy, offers opportunities that are difficult to find anywhere else while continuing to strengthen its ties with the companies shaping the future of engineering and motorsport.
