Flag football is writing a new chapter in its history with the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championship, a tournament that will have particular importance as the first major qualifying event on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. From 13 to 16 August, 16 men’s and 16 women’s teams will gather in Düsseldorf, Germany, with two goals that go hand in hand: winning the world title and securing one of the first available spots for the sport’s Olympic debut. The competition will bring together some of the sport’s leading powers alongside teams looking to use the international stage to take a competitive step forward.

The qualification system adds further pressure to every game. Both the men’s and women’s tournaments will have two Olympic spots available, although that number could increase if United States, already qualified as the host nation, finishes among the top two. In that scenario, the spot would go to the team finishing third. The United States also arrives as the championship’s historic benchmark: its men’s team has won the last five editions, while the women’s team has claimed the last three titles. However, Mexico has begun to challenge that dominance in the women’s competition after defeating the United States at the 2025 World Games.

Düsseldorf hosts the first battle for Los Angeles 2028

The IFAF World Championship will bring the teams together at the Flag Football Complex at the sports facilities in the Koblenzer Straße district of Düsseldorf. The 16 teams in each gender will be divided into four groups and will begin the competition with a group stage in which each team will face the other three teams in its group. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, while the bottom two will compete for lower positions. With three fields operating simultaneously, the tournament will pack a significant number of games into just a few days and leave very little room to recover from a poor result in the opening phase.

From the quarter-finals onwards, every game will carry increasing weight as the tournament reaches its decisive stages. The men’s and women’s semi-finals are scheduled for 15 August, while the medal games will take place on 16 August and will determine both the world champions and some of the first qualifiers for Los Angeles 2028. The presence of the United States also introduces a particular element to the distribution of spots: since the host nation already has one men’s and one women’s quota place, if either of its teams finishes among the top two, the third-placed team in that category will earn the corresponding Olympic spot.

Powers, contenders and a new Olympic journey

The United States will enter the championship as the team that has set the pace in the competition in recent years. The men’s team has dominated the previous five editions, while the women’s team has won the last three. That record makes both squads natural medal contenders, but the women’s competition arrives with an element of uncertainty following Mexico’s victory over the United States at the Chengdu 2025 World Games. The result allowed Mexico to become the highest-ranked team and added a new focus to a competition that has been dominated by American superiority for years.

The World Championship will also create space for new stories. Nigeria will field its men’s and women’s teams for the first time, while American Samoa will make its debut with its men’s team and Slovenia will do the same in the women’s competition. For these teams, the event in Düsseldorf represents an opportunity to compete against more experienced programmes and build an international pathway at a particularly important moment for the sport’s growth. The Olympic spots, meanwhile, are part of a broader qualification process: each Los Angeles 2028 tournament will feature six teams per gender, with one spot reserved for the United States, two decided at this World Championship and the remaining three determined through the Olympic Q-Series, scheduled for May and June 2028.
