The road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is already beginning to take shape for European table tennis. The European Table Tennis Union (ETTU) has officially confirmed that the European Games Istanbul 2027 will be the event that awards the continent’s mixed team qualification spot, marking the start of the qualification process for a discipline that has become increasingly important within the Olympic program promoted by the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF).
The decision not only determines where Europe’s representative will be decided, but also provides national federations with greater clarity regarding the competition calendar and qualification criteria. With a structured qualification system and new monitoring tools for mixed teams, Europe aims to strengthen a discipline that has shown steady growth in recent years and will arrive in Istanbul with a direct ticket to Los Angeles 2028 at stake.
Istanbul 2027 will mark the first major step toward Los Angeles
The European Games will feature 16 mixed teams competing for the continental title and, at the same time, for the only direct European qualification spot for the Olympic Games. The team that wins the gold medal will secure its place at Los Angeles 2028 as Europe’s representative, while the individual events will also play a significant role by awarding points for both the ETTU European Ranking and the ITTF World Ranking.
The competition format is designed to balance consistent performance with open qualification opportunities. One place will be reserved for the host nation, 11 teams will qualify through the European Mixed Team Ranking, and the remaining four places will be decided through a qualification tournament open to National Olympic Committees that have not secured direct qualification. As part of this process, the ETTU will launch a dedicated European Mixed Team Ranking from August 2026, updated monthly, with the November edition determining the directly qualified teams after also taking into account the results of the European Championships in Ljubljana.
A qualification system that reflects the growth of mixed team competition
The European qualification place is part of the global qualification system established by the ITTF for the mixed team tournament at Los Angeles 2028. In total, the qualification process will allow 86 athletes per gender to reach the Olympic Games through five different pathways. In addition to the five continental places, six teams will qualify through the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2027, two through the January 2028 World Ranking, one as the host nation, and the remaining two through players who have already qualified in the singles, doubles, or mixed doubles events.
The confirmation of this pathway comes at a time of growing strength for European table tennis in the mixed team discipline. The bronze medal won by Germany at the ITTF Mixed Team World Cup 2025 made the country the first European team to reach the podium in all three editions of the tournament, reflecting the continent’s growing competitive strength. With that momentum, Istanbul 2027 is set to become the stage where not only a European title will be contested, but also the opportunity to take the first major step toward the Olympic dream of Los Angeles 2028.
