The road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games is already beginning to take shape for the world’s best surfers. The International Surfing Association (ISA) has confirmed that the ISA World Surfing Games 2027 will take place from May 22 to 30, 2027, in Surf City El Salvador, a venue that has become one of the leading stages on the international surfing calendar. Beyond crowning the new world champions, the event will mark a milestone as the first ISA competition to award Olympic qualification spots directly to individual surfers by name.
The event will once again bring together the world’s surfing elite at the waves of La Bocana and El Sunzal, two breaks that have earned international recognition over the past few years by hosting some of the sport’s most important competitions. For El Salvador, hosting the event represents another acknowledgment of a strategy that has transformed the country into a global surfing destination, while for the athletes it will provide a unique opportunity to move closer to the Olympic dream through a qualification system unlike any previously seen in the sport.
A World Championship that opens the road to Los Angeles 2028
The ISA World Surfing Games 2027 will carry greater sporting significance than any previous edition. For the first time, the competition will qualify individual surfers by name for the continental quota places in Africa and Oceania, awarding one men’s and one women’s Olympic berth for each continent on the road to Los Angeles 2028. In addition, the event will allocate four places per gender for the Lima 2027 Pan American Games, where the top male and female surfers from the Americas will earn direct qualification to the Olympic Games.
The importance of the event will also extend to team performance. The highest-ranked men’s and women’s teams will each secure an Olympic quota place for their respective National Olympic Committees, replicating the qualification opportunity introduced in the 2026 edition. As a result, the championship will combine the battle for world titles with a strategic race to secure a place at the next Olympic Games, increasing the competitive pressure from the opening round and turning every heat into a decisive step on the Olympic pathway.
El Salvador strengthens its place on the world surfing map
Since 2019, Surf City El Salvador has hosted 11 ISA events, including two previous editions of the ISA World Surfing Games that served as Olympic qualifiers. That track record has strengthened the relationship between the international federation and the Central American nation, which has used surfing as a platform to raise its global profile thanks to the quality of its waves and a long-term commitment to infrastructure development and the organization of international competitions.
ISA President Fernando Aguerre highlighted that El Salvador has been the setting for some of the most important moments in surfing’s Olympic journey and described this new edition as a historic step for the sport. Likewise, Minister of Tourism Morena Valdez emphasized that the partnership with the ISA is part of the Surf City El Salvador strategy, led by President Nayib Bukele, to strengthen the country’s international profile, attract investment, and welcome thousands of visitors through major sporting events that continue to establish surfing as one of the driving forces behind the nation’s tourism industry.
