Andrea Kimi Antonelli heads into the 2026 United States Grand Prix with a mathematical chance of becoming Formula 1 world champion. The Italian driver for Mercedes arrives in Austin leading the championship, with an opportunity to move closer to a dream he has carried since childhood. However, behind his current sporting success lies a family story shaped by the financial challenges of motorsport and his father’s fear that his son might face the same disappointments he experienced.

At 20, the Italian acknowledges that his family’s support and Mercedes’ backing have been fundamental to reaching the top. His father, a former driver and current head of racing teams, knows the demands of the sport firsthand: when he tried to build his own career, a lack of financial support limited his opportunities. That experience explains why he initially resisted the idea of Kimi following in his footsteps, until his son’s passion and talent convinced him to give him a chance.

From his first karts to Mercedes’ backing

Born in Bologna on August 25, 2006, Andrea Kimi Antonelli grew up surrounded by engines thanks to his father, Marco, a former driver who runs his own racing team. He first climbed into a kart at the age of five and quickly discovered a passion that would shape his future. In 2015, he began competing in karting categories and soon stood out for his speed and ability to fight for victories. His results attracted the attention of development teams and established him as one of the most promising young talents of his generation.

His progress led Mercedes to include him in its junior programme in 2019, when he was just 12 years old. After winning European karting titles, he moved into single-seaters and became champion of Italian and German Formula 4 in 2022, before winning the Formula Regional Middle East and European championships in 2023. In 2024, he moved directly into Formula 2 without competing in Formula 3, securing victories that strengthened Mercedes’ confidence in his potential. That rapid rise opened the doors to Formula 1 in 2025, turning into reality a possibility his father had once feared because of the financial challenges of motorsport.

Marco Antonelli, the father who wanted to protect him from a “costly and cruel” sport

“My father didn’t want me to race because motorsport is expensive and cruel,” the driver explained as he recalled the early stages of his career. Marco Antonelli had personally experienced the difficulties of making his way through racing without the financial resources needed to continue. That reality shaped his own career and led him to establish his team, but it also raised fears that his son might have to go through similar situations. His resistance did not stem from a lack of confidence in Kimi, but from a desire to spare him the frustrations he knew all too well.

Over time, the young driver’s passion changed that perspective. “He didn’t want me to face the same disappointments he had experienced. It was very hard for him to accept; he wanted to protect me. He saw my passion and let me try,” Antonelli recalled. Their relationship has evolved from that initial concern into one of the cornerstones of his career. Kimi describes his father as his main source of support, someone who has shared his racing knowledge with him since childhood and continues to guide him in areas that extend beyond driving.

Mercedes and the dream of becoming world champion

Antonelli’s story is also closely linked to Mercedes’ decision to back him from his early karting years, allowing him to progress through the junior categories and reach Formula 1. The Italian has acknowledged that without this support, he probably would not have reached his current position. The transition to the top category has brought a different set of challenges: the pressure is greater, rivals have extraordinary experience, and every decision can have significant consequences for the result. Even so, the experience he gained in the junior categories has helped him develop a competitive mindset that he considers essential for this stage of his career.

In Austin, Antonelli faces a historic opportunity, although he needs a highly favourable combination of results to clinch the championship this weekend. The driver has chosen to focus on his own performance and follow the advice of his race engineer, Peter “Bono” Bonnington: enjoy the moment and take each race as it comes. “It would be a dream. I’ve dreamed of it since I was a child. Just being in this position is incredible. I need to keep pushing because it’s not over yet,” he said. While Lewis Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, has praised his maturity, the Italian is trying to manage expectations without losing sight of the work that remains to be done.
