In a joint effort to tackle the climate crisis from within the sports sector, the OCEAN Sport CO₂ Calculator has been officially launched — the first carbon calculator specifically designed for sports organizations and available free of charge worldwide. This tool, developed by the Oeko-Institut as part of the EU-funded OCEAN project and supported by the IOC, ANOC, and the EU Office of the European Olympic Committees (EOC), aims to empower the sports sector with reliable data to manage and reduce their emissions.

Thanks to its intuitive design, automated functionality, and alignment with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG), the calculator enables accurate estimates using country-specific emission factors. In addition, it includes a unique feature that illustrates possible reductions, helping sports organizations not only understand their environmental impact but also set concrete reduction goals.

An accessible solution for effective climate action

The OCEAN Tool has been designed with the real needs of National Olympic Committees and sports federations in mind, thanks to the active participation of 18 European NOCs and several international federations. Its availability in English, Spanish, and French reinforces its global reach, allowing any organization, regardless of location, to start making sustainable decisions from an informed perspective.

From the IOC, Head of Sustainability Julie Duffus emphasized that this tool represents a concrete step in the Olympic Movement’s commitment to the environment, while from ANOC, Andres Santi highlighted the importance of making the tool available to the entire sports ecosystem. For Tobias Wagner, a researcher at the Oeko-Institut, access to clear data and reliable insights is key: only then can organizations invest in truly effective actions to reduce their carbon footprint.
