The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) celebrated the global launch of the CO₂ OCEAN Sport Calculator, a pioneering tool designed to help sports organizations measure and reduce their carbon footprint. Developed by the Oeko-Institut with the support of the EU-funded OCEAN Project, this platform marks a major step toward a more sustainable, accessible, and environmentally committed sports world.

The calculator, now available free of charge and in multiple languages, was designed in collaboration with 18 European National Olympic Committees and various international federations. Its launch was made possible through the joint efforts of key actors such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the EU Office of the European Olympic Committees (EOC) and ANOC, which supported the initiative from the outset to ensure a global and tangible impact.

A tool to turn intention into climate action

The CO₂ OCEAN Sport Calculator provides a scientific and user-friendly solution for NOCs and other sports organizations to accurately assess their carbon emissions. With automated calculations tailored to each country’s data and activity type, the tool helps set realistic and effective reduction goals. Its unique function for visualizing emissions reductions facilitates decision-making focused on action and long-term planning.

“This tool allows sports organizations to move from intention to action with reliable and easy-to-understand data,” explained Tobias Wagner, lead researcher at the Oeko-Institut. For his part, Andrés Santi, Senior Director at ANOC, emphasized, “We are proud to have contributed to its development and to see it now freely available to all NOCs and sports organizations worldwide.” Available in English, French, and Spanish, the calculator is designed to reflect the day-to-day realities of the global sports ecosystem and promote sustainability in an inclusive and practical way.
