The 2026 European Beach Volleyball Championships have launched the sport’s qualification process for Los Angeles 2028 this week in Stare Jablonki, Poland. The 32 teams in each gender are competing for the continental title and the first Olympic quota places earned through competition. The men’s and women’s champions will secure a place for their respective countries, but they are not guaranteed to be the athletes who eventually compete at the Games.
The quota place is allocated to the National Olympic Committee -NOC-, which will subsequently select its representatives following a recommendation from the national federation. This is not a new rule and was also applied at Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024. What makes the new cycle different is its timing: the continental quotas are being awarded from August 2026, almost two years before the Games, whereas the corresponding places for Paris were decided only one month before the Olympic competition.
The quota belongs to the country
The Olympic beach volleyball tournament will feature 24 teams per gender, with each NOC permitted to enter a maximum of two. The United States receives one men’s and one women’s quota as the host country. The five continental confederations will award one place per gender through their 2026 championships, the 2027 World Championships will provide another, the Olympic Ranking will distribute 14, and the remaining three will come from the Olympic Q-Series, scheduled between May and June 2028.
Across all these pathways, the quota belongs to the NOC and is not automatically tied to the athletes who earned it. Each committee must select its representatives from its 12 highest-ranked eligible athletes according to the International Volleyball Federation -FIVB- ranking points accumulated up to 12 June 2028. NOCs and national federations that have obtained quota places may also organise national Olympic trials to determine their teams, provided the selected athletes meet the eligibility requirements. Winning the 2026 European title qualifies the country but does not provide the champions with an individual ticket to the Games.
A qualification process beginning almost two years in advance
At Paris 2024, the five continental quotas per gender were also allocated to NOCs, but the final qualification events took place between 13 and 23 June 2024. Although the winning teams did not have an absolute individual guarantee, the short interval before the Games reduced the possibility of a change. The 2023 World Championships did award one quota around nine months in advance. During the Tokyo cycle, the 2019 World Championships and Olympic Qualification Tournament distributed places approximately one year before the Games’ originally scheduled date, and NOCs also had to choose from their 12 highest-ranked eligible athletes.
The LA28 calendar significantly extends that interval for the continental quotas. Partnerships can change, while injuries, retirements, variations in form or domestic selection processes could all affect the final decision over the next two years. The situation applies to the teams competing in Poland this week, including Olympic and world champions David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig, Tokyo 2020 champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum, world champions Tina Graudina and Anastasija Samoilova, and Olympic medallists Tanja Hüberli and Nina Brunner. The winners will secure a crucial quota place for their country but will need to maintain their level until 2028 to occupy it.
LA28 has already started awarding places
Beach volleyball is joining a qualification process that is already under way in other sports. The World Baseball Classic opened competition-based qualification in March; the 2025-2026 FIH Pro League awarded the first hockey places; the 2026 Women’s T20 World Cup did the same in cricket; and the Fédération Equestre Internationale -FEI- World Championships in Aachen have awarded six dressage team quotas this week. Competitions held in 2026 are already beginning to define Olympic tournaments that will not take place for another two years.
The calendar will continue over the coming months. Aachen will award seven eventing team quotas on 16 August and another seven in jumping when the team competition concludes on 21 August. The remaining continental beach volleyball championships will take place by November, while the indoor volleyball continental tournaments will each provide one men’s and one women’s quota. The Asian Games will form part of the hockey and archery qualification processes, while the ISSF World Championships in Doha will distribute 36 shooting quotas from 1 to 14 November. In men’s cricket, the rankings on 31 December will determine a significant part of the LA28 field.
