The Women’s Match Racing World Championship, one of the most prestigious events on the World Sailing calendar, has announced its host city for the 2025 edition: Chicago. From September 16 to 20, the world’s best female sailors will gather at Belmont Station of the Chicago Yacht Club to compete for the world title on the waters of Lake Michigan. This announcement not only underscores the significance of the tournament but also highlights World Sailing’s and the United States’ commitment to advancing and promoting women’s sailing.
The selection of Chicago comes at a historic moment, as the Chicago Yacht Club celebrates its 150th anniversary in 2025. With a rich tradition of organizing top-tier competitions, the club is renowned for its iconic Race to Mackinac and its leadership in training new generations of sailors. According to Jen Dorsch, regatta chair, the event will provide an opportunity to combine sporting excellence with camaraderie among international teams.
A Pivotal Event for Women’s Sailing
Up to 12 teams will participate in the tournament, competing aboard Tom28 boats, 2.8-meter one-design vessels specifically crafted for match racing. This format demands not only exceptional technical and tactical skills but also a profound understanding of strategic maneuvers in head-to-head competitions.
Jim Morris, World Sailing’s Events Director, emphasized that this championship serves as a unique platform to showcase women’s talent in the sport: “We are thrilled to partner with the Chicago Yacht Club, which has proven to be a world-class host, to deliver an unforgettable spectacle in 2025.”
