With just over 200 days to go until its opening, the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games are entering a decisive phase. The recent visit of the Coordination Commission of the International Olympic Committee marked a turning point in the event’s preparations, confirming that Senegal is no longer just projecting a vision, but moving forward with determination toward its realization. From the vibrant coast of Dakar to the developing hubs of Diamniadio and Saly, the country is beginning to transform into a stage where sport, culture and youth converge.

During March 25 and 26, the eighth meeting of the Commission made it possible to assess on-site progress across venues and key initiatives, bringing together local authorities, the organizing committee and representatives of the Olympic Movement. In this context, not only advances in infrastructure and planning emerge, but also a narrative centered on young people as protagonists, with programs designed to actively involve them in the Olympic experience. The countdown is not only measured in days, but in the growing pulse of a nation preparing to open its doors to the world.

From planning to execution: venues, human capital and tangible progress

The shift into the execution phase is reflected in the tangible development of venues and the consolidation of the organizational structure. Sites such as the Tour de l’Œuf Complex, the Iba Mar Diop Complex and the Equestrian Center are approaching completion, marking key milestones in a timeline that no longer allows delays. At the same time, sports planning has intensified in close coordination with international federations, with competition schedules already defined and the ticketing program close to launch.

This progress is also driven by the growth of human capital. The organization has strengthened its team by incorporating local and international talent through programs such as the Learning Academy. Added to this is the global enthusiasm to take part in the Games, reflected in more than 14,000 applications from 115 countries for the Jambaar26 volunteer program. In the words of Humphrey Kayange, the project has evolved from an idea into a tangible reality, where the focus is now on executing each of the next steps with precision.

Youth at the core and a flame set to travel across Senegal

Beyond infrastructure, Dakar 2026 is built on a vision that places younger generations at the heart of the event. The “Jeunesse en Jeux” initiative aims to engage up to 300,000 young people, not only as spectators but as active participants in sports, cultural and educational activities. This approach expands the impact of the Games, connecting them with communities across the country and consolidating a legacy that has already reached hundreds of thousands of Senegalese youth.

One of the most symbolic milestones will be the journey of the Youth Olympic flame, which will be lit in Athens on September 10, 2026, before beginning its journey across Senegal’s 14 regions. With around 30 stops planned, the relay will bring the Olympic spirit throughout the territory, accompanied by celebrations that will also extend across the African continent with the support of Olympic Solidarity. Meanwhile, new elements such as the official poster, song, dance and ceremonial uniforms will begin to shape the visual and cultural identity of Games that, according to Mamadou D. Ndiaye, are advancing with confidence toward their final stretch, driven by the conviction of delivering a sustainable event deeply connected to its people.
