Egypt continues to mark a golden era in world squash, achieving the double at the 2024 World Team Championships organized by the World Squash Federation (WSF). The event, held at the Hong Kong Football Stadium, culminated on Sunday with both the Egyptian men’s and women’s teams winning 2-0 in their respective finals.
The men’s team beat England, while the women’s team repeated their 2022 clash against the United States, with an identical result. These victories consolidate Egypt as an undisputed squash powerhouse: the men won their seventh world title, falling just one short of Australia’s all-time record, and the women reached their sixth crown, their fourth in a row.
FOURTH CONSECUTIVE WOMEN’S CROWN
The women’s team, led by seven-time world champion Nour El Sherbini, defeated the United States in an emotionally charged final. Rowan Elaraby opened the scoring for Egypt after beating Marina Stefanoni in a tight match that ended 3-1 (11-6, 12-10, 6-11, 11-9). Her passionate celebration made it clear that victory was within her team’s grasp.
Nour El Sherbini secured the win by defeating Olivia Weaver, also 3-1 (11-7, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7, 11-7), in a match that lasted 38 minutes. Despite the loss, the U.S. team showed significant progress by reaching its second consecutive final, and promises to be a solid contender at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
MEN’S VICTORY OVER ENGLAND
In the men’s field, Egypt also faced a repeat of the previous final, this time against England, led by Egyptian-born former world champion Mohamed Elshorbagy. The day began with a thrilling duel between Mazen Hesham and Curtis Malik, with Hesham coming from behind to take the win 3-2 (4-11, 13-11, 6-11, 11-6, 11-8) after 63 minutes of play.
The denouement came with Ali Farag, current world number one and four-time world champion, sealing the title for Egypt by beating Elshorbagy 3-1 (6-11, 13-11, 11-8, 11-9). The win reaffirms the dominance of Egyptian squash, leaving fans with high expectations ahead of the 2028 Olympic Games, where the sport will make its official debut.
GOLDEN ERA OF EGYPTIAN SQUASH
With this new double, Egypt continues to cement its legacy as the most dominant nation in world squash. From the successes of Ahmed Barada to the current brilliance of the likes of Nour El Sherbini and Ali Farag, the North African country is in an unprecedented golden era.
Squash’s debut at Los Angeles 2028 will be a historic opportunity for Egypt, whose players will be clear favorites to open the sport’s Olympic medal table. Their success in Hong Kong not only reinforces their supremacy, but also inspires a new generation of talent looking to follow in the footsteps of their idols.
