The designation of Istanbul as the host of the 2027 European Games once again represents a meeting point between the sporting vision of the continent and Türkiye’s institutional commitment. The signing of the Host Country Agreement between the European Olympic Committee (EOC) and the country’s Ministry of Youth and Sports confirms full support for the fourth edition of the event, consolidating work that began months earlier with the Host City Contract. This step is not only an administrative milestone but also a declaration of confidence in Istanbul’s ability to host world-class competitions and serve as a stage where Europe’s top athletes can pursue their Olympic dreams.
As preparations move forward, collaboration between European sports bodies and Turkish institutions continues to strengthen. The confirmation of the EOC Coordination Commission, led by Mihai Covaliu and accompanied by a team of 25 members from across the continent, reinforces a structure designed to oversee each stage of the process. With its first visit scheduled for January 2026, this commission will be essential in ensuring that Türkiye’s largest city can meet the scale of the challenge involved in hosting one of the region’s most important multisport events.
An agreement that reaffirms Türkiye’s commitment to European sport
The signing of the Host Country Agreement by EOC President Spyros Capralos and Turkish Minister Osman Aşkın Bak stands as the central point of this new organizational phase. Capralos highlighted the strong relationship between the EOC and Turkish sports institutions, valuing the country’s experience in hosting major international events and the attention given to every detail to ensure a memorable edition. In his view, Istanbul brings together all the attributes needed to welcome the continent’s best athletes during a cycle in which many will be seeking qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
Minister Bak, for his part, emphasized the pride that hosting the European Games represents for Türkiye and reiterated the Government’s commitment to delivering an exceptional event. His message pointed toward a shared vision: showcasing the best of Turkish sport and the country’s hospitality, working closely with the EOC, the National Olympic Committee, and metropolitan authorities to offer an experience that honors Istanbul’s sporting legacy.
A diverse Coordination Commission prepared to face the challenge
At the head of the Coordination Commission is Mihai Covaliu, a two-time Olympic medalist in fencing, who underscored the importance of building collaborative work from day one. His leadership seeks to integrate the experience and diversity of a team of 25 European representatives who will oversee progress in each area, from infrastructure to operations, ensuring that the expectations of athletes and fans are met with excellence.
The work of this commission will be key to continuing the legacy of the Kraków–Małopolska 2023 European Games, where more than 100 quota places were awarded for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. With the sports program still being defined, Istanbul 2027 is emerging as a crucial chapter in the qualification pathway toward Los Angeles 2028, reinforcing the importance of coordinated work that is now beginning to take clearer shape.
