Volleyball in Qatar has experienced remarkable growth thanks to the collaboration between the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) and the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC). Recently, leaders from both organizations met in Lausanne to discuss strategies for developing volleyball in the country and across the Middle East. This meeting built upon previous discussions from December 2024, allowing for further progress in planning volleyball activities in the region.
Qatar has a strong track record in beach volleyball, with achievements such as the bronze medal won by Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Additionally, Doha has hosted major international events, including the Beach Pro Tour Finals and the WAVA U-20 Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship 2024.
GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES
This partnership not only promotes the development of beach volleyball but also aims to increase participation and interest in volleyball as a whole. Qatar’s expertise in organizing international beach volleyball events is a valuable asset. Hosting competitions such as the Beach Pro Tour Finals and the WAVA U-20 Women’s Beach Volleyball Championship 2024 has showcased the country’s capability to stage high-level tournaments. Furthermore, the bronze medal won at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games by Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan has inspired a new generation of athletes in Qatar. These achievements align with the FIVB Strategic Vision 2032, which seeks to empower and expand mass participation in the sport.
The collaboration between the FIVB and the QOC also focuses on strengthening sports infrastructure and developing grassroots programs to encourage volleyball participation from an early age. This includes training initiatives and volleyball promotion in schools and communities, helping to boost the sport’s popularity in Qatar and ensuring its long-term sustainability. With these initiatives, Qatar is well-positioned to become a key hub for volleyball development in the Middle East.
