The International Federation of Muaythai Associations (IFMA) continues to lead the way in promoting gender equality and combating violence against women and girls. Since 2014, IFMA has established a strategic partnership with UN Women, using the global reach of muaythai as a tool to raise awareness and take action on pressing social issues.
Central to this collaboration is the ‘Orange Day’ initiative, which is part of the UN Secretary-General’s UNiTE campaign. Every 25th of the month, it is dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action against gender-based violence. Sue Glassy, Vice President of IFMA, said: “For IFMA, every day is Orange Day”, underlining the organisation’s continued commitment.
GLOBAL EDUCATION PROGRAMMES AND CAMPAIGNS
IFMA has integrated the philosophy of gender equality and anti-violence into all of its education and sports development programmes. From coach education to youth activities, these efforts promote values of respect, inclusion and empowerment.
In addition, IFMA is actively involved in global campaigns such as ‘Orange the World’, which takes place annually from 25 November to 10 December during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence. Through impactful events and activities, the federation amplifies the message of ending violence against women and girls around the world.
MUAYTHAI AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
The partnership between IFMA and UN Women has established muaythai as a sport committed to addressing global social issues. This collaboration includes a landmark agreement between the two entities to promote gender equality and eliminate gender-based violence.
Joint initiatives include:
- The creation of the UN Women Trophy, a symbol of the transformative impact of sport.
- Regular meetings of the IFMA Women’s Commission and UN Women to ensure inclusive and safe environments.
- The involvement of ambassadors such as Muaythai superstar Bua Kaw in campaigns such as HeForShe, which seek to engage men and boys in the fight for gender equality.
IFMA, MUAYTHAI AND ITS LEADERSHIP IN GLOBAL INCLUSION
IFMA reinforces its international leadership by actively participating in campaigns led by UN Women, such as ‘Orange the World’, demonstrating its commitment to empowering communities through sport. The federation has established muaythai as a vehicle for social change, instilling values of respect and justice at every step.
With these initiatives, IFMA not only promotes gender equality, but also reaffirms its determination to build a future free of violence against women and girls. In Glassy’s words: “The spirit of Orange Day lives in every action we take, every day.”
