India continues its efforts to position itself as a future host of the Olympic Games. From January 27 to 30, the state of Gujarat will host the inaugural International Olympic Research Conference, an event aimed at designing sustainable strategies for organizing events of this magnitude. The venue will be the Rashtriya Raksha University (RRU) campus in Gandhinagar, where experts, officials, and leaders from the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) will discuss the opportunities and challenges faced by countries hosting such events.

According to Utsav Chaware, director of the Bharat Centre for Olympic Research and Education (BCORE), the conference will address topics such as funding and economic models for building sustainable sports infrastructure. This aligns with India’s goal of strengthening its bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games, in a context where sustainability and financial management have become key factors in avoiding the high costs and maintenance issues that have plagued many Olympic venues.

FUNDING AND SUSTAINABILITY

The conference will focus on four main themes: designing a strategic plan for India’s Olympic bid under the “Vision 2036” motto, international best practices in selecting host cities, sustainable economic models for funding the Olympic Games, and integrating sustainability into sports infrastructure. Additionally, fundamental issues such as gender equality and inclusion in Olympic disciplines will be addressed.

The event will feature prominent figures, including IOA President PT Usha and Vice President Gagan Narang. Researchers and experts in Olympic studies will also participate, sharing analyses and perspectives on how to maximize the positive impact of the Olympic Games. This conference will not only serve as a platform for innovation but also as a key step in demonstrating to the world that India is ready to take on a leading role in the global Olympic movement.
