The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has decided to allow Russian athletes to compete under a neutral flag at the 2025 World and European Slalom Championships in Australia and Paris. This measure ends a three-year suspension imposed on Russian athletes due to the conflict in Ukraine. The decision was made in collaboration with the host countries of the events and follows the guidelines of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which since 2023 has permitted the limited return of Russian and Belarusian athletes, provided they do not actively support the war.

The return of Russian athletes to international competitions is a key opportunity for their preparation and qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. The measure also ensures the competitiveness of important events such as the European Slalom Championship, which will be held in Paris in May 2025, and the World Championship in Australia in October of the same year. The participation of these athletes under a neutral flag is crucial to maintaining the level of competition and ensuring a high-quality competitive environment.

REINTEGRATION OF RUSSIAN ATHLETES

The ICF’s decision is an important step in the current Olympic cycle, as it allows Russian athletes to compete for Olympic qualification without officially representing their country. This measure restores the quality of canoe and kayak slalom, an Olympic sport that requires precision and speed skills. With the participation of Russian athletes, even as neutrals, the competitiveness of international events will improve, benefiting all participants. Additionally, it ensures that athletes who have no power over political decisions can continue to enjoy their right to compete in major global competitions.
