In a historic moment for Greek sports, Isidoros Kouvelos has been elected as the new President of the Hellenic Olympic Committee (HOC), succeeding Spyros Capralos after 16 years of leadership. This transition marks a turning point in Greek sports administration, with Kouvelos, who previously chaired the International Olympic Academy, taking on a prominent role.
The election was not an easy one, as Kouvelos secured 21 votes against his opponent’s 13, in an electoral process that reflects a generational renewal within Greek Olympism. His extensive experience in sports institutions positions him well for this new challenge.
AN EXPERIENCED LEADER
Kouvelos joins the Hellenic Olympic Committee with a solid background in the Olympic world. Since 2005, he has been a committee member representing the Hellenic Equestrian Federation and previously served as Vice President from 2005 to 2008. His international experience includes serving as Chef de Mission at the Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games.
In his inaugural speech, Kouvelos emphasized his commitment to Olympic values, highlighting the importance of maintaining clean and fair competition. He also recognized the work of his predecessor, Spyros Capralos, publicly thanking him for his contribution to Greek sports.
