In a significant step for Kazakhstan’s sporting future, Yerbol Myrzabossynov, Minister of Tourism and Sport, met with Marius Vizer, President of the International Judo Federation, at the IJF headquarters in Budapest. The high-level meeting, attended by Almaz Alsenov, IJF partner and advisor to the IJF President, resulted in the official signing of the contract for Kazakhstan to host the 2027 World Judo Championships.

This decision underscores Kazakhstan’s rapid rise in the world of judo, both as a competitor and a host for global sporting events. Following the signing ceremony, Mr. Vizer presented Mr. Myrzabossynov with a special Herend porcelain statue of Jigoro Kano, the founder of judo, symbolizing the nation’s steadfast support for the development of judo worldwide.

During their meeting, the parties reflected on the growth and accomplishments of judo in Kazakhstan, highlighting its expanding popularity, particularly among young athletes. The country’s dedication to the sport has borne impressive fruit, including its first-ever Olympic gold medal in judo, won by Yeldos Smetov during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Smetov’s victory was a proud moment for Kazakhstan and a testament to its emerging strength in the international judo arena.

Kazakhstan’s hosting of the 2027 World Judo Championships marks a major milestone in its journey within the global judo community. The event, set to attract the world’s top judokas, will serve as a critical preparatory stage for athletes on the road to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. This prestigious competition is expected to further cement Kazakhstan’s position as a leading judo nation, both regionally and globally.

Alongside the 2027 event, Mr. Vizer and Mr. Myrzabossynov initiated plans to establish a representative office of the IJF Academy in Kazakhstan.

This initiative will provide valuable training and development resources for athletes and coaches not only from Kazakhstan but also across Central Asia. The new office is expected to significantly enhance the professional capabilities of judo practitioners, contributing to the region’s growing influence in the sport.

As Kazakhstan continues to invest in its judo infrastructure, the country is well on its way to becoming a dominant force on the international stage. The 2027 World Judo Championships will be a pivotal moment in that journey, showcasing Kazakhstan’s commitment to the sport and providing a platform for its athletes to excel ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
