Key Dates for the IOC Presidential Transition

This Monday, the seven candidates aspiring to become the President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) were officially announced. The candidates include Sebastian Coe (Great Britain), Juan Antonio Samaranch Júnior (Spain), Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe), Prince Faisal al-Hussein (Jordan), Morinari Watanabe (Japan), and Johan Eliasch (Sweden/Great Britain). All of them will compete to succeed Thomas Bach, who has led the IOC since 2013.

The election process will conclude from March 18 to 21, 2025, when the tenth IOC President will be elected for an initial eight-year term, with the possibility of a four-year extension. The candidates announced from this Monday will be able to submit their candidacy documents and start promotional campaigns through interviews and social media.

The decisive moment will come from January 20 to 24, 2025, when each candidate will present themselves in Lausanne, Switzerland, to convince the 111 members of the IOC assembly. This event will be crucial in determining the direction of the Olympic organization in the coming years.

Current President Thomas Bach has stated that he will remain in office until June 24, 2025, with the goal of ensuring a smooth and orderly transition. During the Paris 2024 Games, Bach emphasized the importance of securing a proper transition for the future of the IOC.
