In 2026, the Democratic Republic of Congo will become the focal point of world judo, as Kinshasa is set to host the World Judo Continental Team Championships for Peace. This event, organized under the auspices of the International Judo Federation, is more than a sporting competition; it is a symbolic gathering intended to promote peace, unity, and human values through the discipline of judo.

Kinshasa, the vibrant capital of the DRC, lies on the banks of the Congo River, facing Brazzaville, the capital of the neighboring Republic of Congo. The city, home to over 17 million people, has long been regarded as the beating heart of Central Africa for its cultural influence and its potential as a bridge between nations. Now, the Congolese capital prepares to welcome athletes, coaches, and delegations from across the world in what is expected to be one of the most meaningful sporting events on the continent.

The decision by the IJF to bring the championships to Kinshasa carries a message beyond sport. The country has faced economic hardship and political instability for decades, yet the judo community’s presence there signifies hope, resilience, and the belief that sport can help foster social cohesion. The “Championships for Peace” initiative aligns with the IJF’s long-standing commitment to using judo as a tool for education, respect, and solidarity.

“We are delighted to bring the World Judo Continental Team Championships for Peace to Kinshasa in 2026. This event will be a magnificent celebration of sport, friendship, unity and the values of judo. The Democratic Republic of the Congo has shown extraordinary commitment to developing judo and promoting youth and sports throughout the country. Hosting such a prestigious world event is a great success for the DRC and a milestone for the entire African continent.” IJF President Marius Vizer said.

The event will feature the best judokas from various continents competing in team formats, highlighting collective strength and unity, values deeply rooted in judo’s philosophy. The competition will not only boost the visibility of African judo but also contribute to local development by stimulating tourism and infrastructure improvements in Kinshasa.

Despite the city’s economic challenges, Kinshasa is rapidly evolving. New hotels, sports complexes, and transportation upgrades are already underway to prepare for the influx of international visitors. Local authorities have expressed optimism that hosting such a prestigious event will project a new image of the DRC, one of peace, potential, and hospitality.

Judo in Africa has been growing steadily in recent years, with countries like Morocco, Algeria, and Côte d’Ivoire making notable progress on the international stage. The upcoming championships in Kinshasa represent an opportunity to strengthen this momentum and inspire the next generation of African athletes.

As the world turns its eyes to Kinshasa in 2026, the tournament will serve not only as a competition for medals but also as a celebration of shared humanity. Through the spirit of judo, discipline, mutual respect, and friendship, the World Judo Team Championships for Peace aims to remind us all that sport remains one of the most powerful languages of peace.
