The official launch ceremony for the UIPM Asia-Pacific Development Centre (APDC) construction project took place this tuesday with international participation. This significant milestone marks the beginning of what is expected to be a transformative base for the Modern Pentathlon movement in China, across Asia, and globally. The APDC will also house the UIPM Altitude Training Base and an International Event Centre, providing world-class facilities for athletes.

The event was hosted by officials from Yunnan region provincial authorities, alongside UIPM President Dr. Klaus Schormann and Secretary General Shiny Fang. Notable attendees included AMPC Vice President Cassandro Choh and other high-level representatives from national federations in Mongolia and Sri Lanka, reinforcing the international support for this project.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS AND PROJECT TIMELINE

The construction of the APDC was formalized with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the AMPC and the development centre. This agreement highlights the long-term commitment and strong backing the project has from regional and global sports organizations. The APDC site was chosen in 2023, with the project set to begin construction in late 2024.

The headquarters will be located in the Kunming Shipen Temple Area of the Wuhua district, covering 1,607 acres. In addition to administrative offices, the complex will include a Modern Pentathlon business school, sports park, and an international community, all designed to support the growth of the sport.

STATE-OF-THE-ART FACILITIES

The Altitude Training Base and the International Event Centre are part of the Yunnan Central New District development, spanning 2,517 acres. The site will feature not only training and event facilities but also the Europe Industrial Park, a sports college, and an athletes’ village. This extensive infrastructure will support athletes and events at both the national and international levels.

Once completed, the venue will be qualified to host high-profile UIPM competitions such as the Pentathlon World Championships and Pentathlon World Cups. These new facilities will be crucial in establishing a strong foundation for Modern Pentathlon’s future growth in Asia.

SUPPORT FROM GOVERNMENT AND SPORTS AUTHORITIES

The development project has garnered strong backing from both the Yunnan provincial government and the Kunming city government. Their commitment to the project was solidified through recent discussions with UIPM President Dr. Schormann, where both sides reaffirmed their dedication to realizing the full potential of the development centre.

The Yunnan Dianzhong Area Management Committee and the Wuhua District Committee have been instrumental in coordinating the project. Their role in organizing and securing the necessary support from various functional departments highlights the level of governmental commitment to the success of this initiative.

A GAME CHANGER FOR MODERN PENTATHLON IN ASIA

Dr. Schormann expressed his excitement about the construction project, emphasizing its importance for the development of the sport in Asia. “The APDC will inject new vitality into sport development across the region, giving National Federations a base where athletes can train, and where global audiences can witness the excitement of Modern Pentathlon,” he stated.

Recent successes in Modern Pentathlon, including Olympic medals for China, Korea, and Japan in recent years, underscore the growing influence of the sport in Asia. The APDC will play a key role in continuing this momentum, providing athletes with the resources they need to excel on the international stage.

LONG-TERM BENEFITS FOR THE REGION

Beyond serving as a training hub, the APDC will foster the development of sports infrastructure and communities across Yunnan province. The project will create opportunities for economic development through tourism and international events, positioning Yunnan as a key player in the global sports landscape.

The collaboration between UIPM, AMPC, and local governments will also help promote Modern Pentathlon at the grassroots level, ensuring that the sport has a sustainable future across Asia. By providing modern facilities and high-quality training opportunities, the APDC will nurture future generations of athletes.

FUTURE OUTLOOK FOR THE UIPM ASIA-PACIFIC CENTRE

The UIPM Asia-Pacific Development Centre is not just a landmark for Modern Pentathlon but a symbol of China’s growing influence in global sports. With the support of international and regional bodies, this centre will become a focal point for elite training and competition, while also helping to expand the sport’s reach to new audiences.

As the project progresses, the UIPM and its partners are determined to make the APDC a world-class facility that will serve as a model for future sports infrastructure developments across the globe.
