Madrid is once again excited about the possibility of hosting an Olympic Games. The Grupo Foro Empresarial has urged the Spanish capital to submit a bid for the 2040 edition, arguing that bold ideas and a long-term vision are needed to strengthen its competitiveness, innovation, and social cohesion. This proposal is part of a set of ten initiatives that the organization, founded in 2015 to represent the region’s business interests, has presented to transform Madrid over the next fifteen years. Its president, Hilario Alfaro, emphasized the importance of taking risks and acting with the determination of entrepreneurs.

Support for a future bid comes not only from the business sector but also from political and sports figures. Although the Deputy Councillor for Sports of the Madrid City Council, Sonia Cea, acknowledged that there are no immediate plans to formalize a bid, local and regional authorities have expressed their enthusiasm for the idea. Isabel Díaz Ayuso, president of the Community of Madrid, publicly celebrated the possibility of hosting the Games, while Alejandro Blanco, president of the Spanish Olympic Committee, highlighted that Madrid has ideal conditions to become an Olympic host city.

A long-term project with business support

The proposal from Madrid Foro Empresarial reflects a strong commitment from the private sector to the city’s future. Hilario Alfaro stressed the need to launch projects that span several legislative terms, with the goal of keeping Madrid in a position of global leadership. Alejandro Blanco, for his part, explained that a successful bid must have the joint support of the COE, the national government, the regional government, and the city council, following the new bid model promoted by the International Olympic Committee, which fosters more collaborative and less competitive processes.

However, Madrid faces major challenges. It will need to develop a robust, updated, and financially sustainable project, especially in a context where hosting the Games requires million-dollar investments and long-term planning. Despite competition from cities like Berlin and Warsaw, international interest in Madrid remains high, as recognized by Thomas Bach, president of the IOC, and Christophe Dubi, Executive Director for the Olympic Games. The city’s experience in hosting major events and the strong business backing are key factors that could bring Madrid closer to achieving the Olympic dream in 2040.
