The Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) and the Commonwealth Games Association (TTCGA) have announced a new initiative: the creation of the Athletes’ Commission. This platform aims to represent and empower athletes by giving them a voice within Trinidad and Tobago’s sports community. This action aligns with the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) vision, which promotes the formation of athletes’ commissions in all National Olympic Committees.

The Athletes’ Commission will not only allow athletes to express their concerns and share their experiences, but it will also influence decisions made by both the TTOC and TTCGA. Among the priority issues the commission will address are athlete welfare, professional development, and the promotion of sports integrity. Diane Henderson, president of both the TTOC and TTCGA, highlighted the importance of this initiative, stating that it represents a significant step forward in improving athletes’ conditions both on and off the field.

Diversity and Representation in the Commission

One of the key aspects of the new Athletes’ Commission is the diversity of its members, who come from various sports disciplines. This commission is composed of both active and retired athletes, ensuring comprehensive representation of Trinidad and Tobago’s athletic community. Furthermore, the commission president will work closely with TTOC/TTCGA leaders to provide insights that will influence policies and programs, particularly those affecting athletes.

Henderson also praised the members of the commission, highlighting their courage in taking on this important challenge. He also thanked the efforts of the interim Athletes Commission, which played a crucial role in the electoral process to guarantee a smooth transition to the new work team.

With this initiative, the TTOC and TTCGA seek to foster an environment where athletes not only feel represented but also supported at all stages of their sporting careers.
