The Portuguese Olympic Committee (COP) continues to strongly support the future, sport, and national preparation. With the addition of 40 new athletes to the Olympic Hopeful Scholarships program, the organization reinforces its commitment to providing comprehensive support to those who dream of reaching the Los Angeles 2028 Games. This expansion raises the number of high-potential athletes to more than 150, from various disciplines, representing Portugal’s hope on the world’s greatest sporting stage. More than just a number, these are stories of effort and perseverance that find in this support a decisive boost to turn talent into results.

At the same time, the COP remains mindful of the importance of conditions, spaces, and quality in which its athletes train. The modernization of the High-Performance Centers (CAR) is progressing with an investment of 10 million euros, part of a broader contract mobilizing 65 million dedicated to national sports development. The renovation of infrastructures not only aims to enhance the performance of elite athletes but also to generate a positive impact on federations, clubs, and communities that live sport as a driver of growth and social cohesion.

More scholarships for olympic hopefuls

The Olympic Hopeful Project has become a pillar, a support, and a fundamental base in the preparation of Portuguese athletes. With these new scholarships, financed through the Sports Development Program Contract 2025-2028, the COP reaffirms its commitment to turning the dream of competing in the Games into an achievable goal. For Fernando Gomes, president of the organization, this is a “strategic investment” that ensures better conditions for those who have already demonstrated talent and discipline on their path to high performance.

This expansion reflects the effort, discipline, and joint work between federations and athletes, whose constant dedication yields visible results in the international projection of Portuguese sport. The vision of the COP is clear: to multiply qualification opportunities for the Los Angeles 2028 Games and ensure that athletes compete on equal terms with the world’s sporting powers.

Renewal of centers and plenary assembly

The improvement of the High-Performance Centers is another axis, an objective, and a key component of this plan. The planned works aim to optimize training spaces, ensuring that athletes have modern environments adapted to the demands of today’s sport. This effort will directly benefit those training in these facilities while also leaving a tangible legacy for federations and local communities.

In parallel, the COP is preparing for its Plenary Assembly, a major meeting to be held on September 18, 2025. Among the items on the agenda are the approval of measures linked to the modernization of sports facilities, the promotion of women’s sport, and the support of research projects in collaboration with the Portuguese Paralympic Committee. The ratification of the José Manuel Constantino Award, created in honor of his legacy in service to the Portuguese Olympic movement, will also be debated. With this, the COP strengthens its commitment to transparency, participation, and above all, to placing athletes at the center of its policies.
