The president of the Colombian Football Federation, Ramon Jesurun was arrested in Miami following incidents at the Copa America final. According to a Miami police report, Jesurún was arrested Sunday night for “assaulting an officer/employee” at the Hard Rock Stadium, the site of the Copa América final.
What is noted in the report is that Jesurún, 71, was not allowed to enter the field with his son and other family members. The president’s son was confronted by security who denied them access. Jesurun, who is also vice-president of CONMEBOL and CONMEBOL’s representative on the FIFA Council, also confronted police, according to Colombian media reports.
Miami police have reported 27 arrests and 55 people ejected from the stadium during the match and CONMEBOL has issued a statement condemning the actions of all “fans without tickets who came to the vicinity of the stadium, which delayed the normal access of those who had tickets, slowed the entry and caused the closure of doors.”
“We regret that acts of violence perpetrated by ill-intentioned people have tarnished a final that should have been a great celebration of sport,” concluded the organization, which is led by Paraguay’s Alejandro Dominguez.
