Qatar’s sporting excellence was celebrated at the Sports Excellence Awards 2024, an event organised by the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) under the patronage of its President, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani. The ceremony took place at the Qatar National Convention Centre and was attended by leading dignitaries, sports federation presidents and sponsors, reflecting the country’s commitment to sports development.
The event has become an annual tradition to honour athletes, teams and federations that have taken Qatar’s name to the top on the international stage.
GREAT SEASON FOR QATARI SPORT
During the ceremony, QOC Secretary General Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain highlighted the achievements of the past season, describing it as ‘extraordinary’ for Qatari sport. Among the milestones mentioned, he highlighted the country’s outstanding participation in the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games, where world champion Mutaz Barshim won a bronze medal in the high jump, cementing him as the first athlete to win four Olympic medals in this discipline.
“This season also included key organisational events, such as the World Swimming Championships and the International Gymnastics Federation Congress in Doha, reaffirming our position as a leading destination for international sporting events,” said Al Buenain.
AWARDS FOR THE BEST IN QATARI SPORT
The ceremony was marked by the recognition of the best athletes and federations. Mutaz Barshim was awarded Male Athlete of the Season, while shooting standout Amal Mohammed Mahmoud received the Female Athlete of the Season award. These awards reflect the impact and relevance of their achievements on the national and international sporting scene.
In the team category, the Men’s Team of the Season Award went to the Qatari beach volleyball team, which has proven its quality in international competitions.
OUTSTANDING FEDERATIONS
The efforts of sports federations were also recognised during the gala. The Qatar Handball Association received the Golden Federation Award for Team Sports, while the Qatar Athletics Federation was honoured with the Golden Federation Award for Individual Sports, highlighting its work in the development of sport at the national level.
Al Buenain used the occasion to thank partners and sponsors from both the government and private sectors, highlighting their crucial role in the growth of sport and the Olympic movement in Qatar. “This event is an opportunity to recognise the dedication of all those who contribute to the success of Qatari sport,” he said.
QATAR’S AMBITIOUS VISION
The recognition of this season’s achievements reflects a long-term strategy to position Qatar as a global sporting leader. From the success of its athletes to the hosting of international events, the country continues to build a legacy that inspires both current and future generations.
