Recent developments in World Triathlon and its connection to new territories

World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany has shared a letter to National Federation Presidents and Secretaries General outlining his commitment to transparent communication and collaboration, highlighting achievements and next steps for the growth of triathlon globally. The letter addresses topics such as the legacy of Marisol Casado, progress in continental development, regional collaboration and strategic efforts to optimize the event structure.

Antonio Arimany began his message by acknowledging the contribution of Marisol Casado, who completed her term as World Triathlon president on April 21 after 16 years of leadership. Casado will continue her association with the sport as an Honorary Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Arimany expressed his gratitude for her legacy and highlighted her guiding role in the future of the organization.

African Triathlon Championships and continental development

The World Triathlon president also highlighted his participation in the African Triathlon Championships, held in Mandela Bay, South Africa. During the event, Arimany held meetings with federation presidents from countries such as Namibia, Algeria, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tunisia and South Africa. He also thanked Triathlon Africa President Ahmed Nasser and Triathlon South Africa for organizing the event. Plans are being evaluated to host a World Cup in Port Elizabeth in 2026, which would mark the second such event on the African continent.

From South Africa, Arimany traveled to Hong Kong to participate in the Asia Triathlon Congress. During his visit, he signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Hong Kong Triathlon Association, reaffirming the commitment to develop triathlon in the region. He also held meetings with federation presidents from Hong Kong, China, Japan, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Iran and Singapore, highlighting Asia Triathlon President Prince Fahad’s dedication to the growth of the sport.

Event structure study

Arimany reported on the progress of the Event Structure Study, led by Deloitte, which seeks to optimize World Triathlon’s event strategy. Two weeks ago, a workshop was held in Madrid with the participation of World Triathlon and key stakeholders. The final results of the study will be presented to the Executive Committee and National Federations in June.

The President also mentioned his visit to Saudi Arabia, where he met with the newly elected President of the Commonwealth Games Association to discuss the future of triathlon in this framework. In addition, he held meetings with the President of the Uganda National Federation and the Saudi Arabian Minister of Sports to explore the possibility of organizing more World Triathlon events in the country.

Selection process for the new Secretary General

Arimany confirmed that the selection process for the new World Triathlon Secretary General is in its final stages. The official announcement of the new incumbent is expected to be made in the coming weeks. And, in his commitment to working closely with all National Federations, Arimany also highlighted recent meetings with new presidents, including Stefan Ruf (Swiss Triathlon), Muhammad Sankareh (Gambia Triathlon), Robyn Spaeth and Denis Myers (Northern Mariana Islands), and Likemore Mahunje (Zambia). In addition, he welcomed newly elected presidents Cvita Gregov (Croatia), Kerstin Mogull (Sweden) and Robyn Spaeth (Northern Mariana Islands), celebrating their addition to the World Triathlon family.
