For the first time in table tennis history, South America will host the most important event on the international calendar: the ITTF 2029 World Championship Finals will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The announcement was made during the ITTF Annual General Meeting in Doha, Qatar, solidifying a bid that stood out for its strategic and collaborative approach.

The selection of Rio de Janeiro marks a milestone for South American table tennis and a unique opportunity to bring the sport to new audiences. With 48 participating teams and a proven track record in hosting major global events, Brazil takes on this challenge with a clear vision: to position the continent as a key player in the sport’s international development.

A historic event driving the growth of table tennis in South America

The Brazilian bid demonstrated careful planning: by withdrawing its candidacy for 2027 and supporting Kazakhstan, Brazil strengthened ties within the international community and positioned itself more strongly to secure the 2029 edition. This strategic decision reflects the country’s commitment not only to the event’s success but also to the long-term global growth of table tennis.

With its vibrant sports culture, organizational experience (including the 2016 Olympic Games), and top-tier infrastructure, Rio is prepared to deliver an unforgettable championship edition. Beyond the sporting spectacle, the 2029 tournament has the potential to inspire a new generation of athletes and solidify table tennis as a sport of growing significance in Latin America.
