The 73rd Congress of the International Union of Modern Pentathlon (UIPM) marked the beginning of a transformative era for the sport with the election of Robert Stull as President. The event also brought a renewed Executive Committee, charged with guiding modern pentathlon into an exciting future, including the steeplechase discipline’s debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The meeting, held after intense days of debate, reflected a commitment to innovation and diversity, with representatives from five continents elected to top positions. Stull, who will assume leadership for the next four years, promises a fresh and dynamic approach to the development of the sport.
A RENEWED DIRECTION FOR THE FUTURE
The Congress also elected new vice presidents, with key figures Sharif Elerian (Egypt), Kitty Chiller (Australia) and Dr. Vyacheslav Malishev (Georgia) bringing experience and vision. In addition, Dongkook Chung (Korea) and Ana Irene Delgado (Panama) joined, consolidating global representation at the highest level of the governing body.
Among the most significant changes, the Congress approved the creation of an Obstacles Commission to ensure the development and proper marketing of this discipline, a centerpiece of pentathlon modernization.
NEW RULES AND DISCIPLINES IN PENTATHLON
During the event, the UIPM statutes were updated to formally include obstacle sports within its framework. These disciplines complement the traditional modern pentathlon and open doors to new combinations such as Tetrathlon, Triathle and Laser Run, among others.
The UIPM also made progress in key areas such as medical rules, Biathle/Triathle competitions and regulations for Paralympic sport, underlining its commitment to inclusive sport adapted to contemporary standards.
HONORS AND AWARDS
As part of the Congress, the annual UIPM 2024 Awards Gala was held, where outstanding figures such as Ahmed Elgendy (EGY) and Michelle Gulyas (HUN), Olympic champions in Paris 2024, as well as Seungmin Seong (KOR), women’s world number one, were recognized. In addition, former President Klaus Schormann received an award for his achievements and was named Honorary President.
With the 74th edition of the Congress scheduled for 2026 in Budapest, the UIPM moves confidently into a promising future, led by a modern vision that seeks to strengthen its place in the global Olympic and sporting landscape.
