In the world of rhythmic gymnastics, integrity and ethics are fundamental pillars. Recently, the Disciplinary Commission of the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation (GEF) has taken decisive action following an extensive investigation into score manipulation at the 2024 European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships, held in Budapest from May 23 to 26. This case highlights the importance of maintaining transparency and fairness in sports competitions, as well as the crucial role of whistleblowers in the fight against corruption.
The investigation, prompted by multiple reports, uncovered serious violations of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) Rules. As a result, the GEF brought charges against Evangelia Trikomiti and European Gymnastics for score manipulation. Following a thorough process, the GEF Disciplinary Commission panel, composed of three independent members, issued its verdict, setting an important precedent in the defense of ethics in sports.
SANCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The GEF Disciplinary Commission panel found Ms. Trikomiti guilty of score manipulation at the 2024 European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships. As a sanction, she was banned for four years from participating in any gymnastics-related activities, except for training. Additionally, her FIG Judge Brevet was revoked, dealing a significant blow to her judging career.
The panel also ruled that European Gymnastics was responsible for Ms. Trikomiti’s violation under Article 4 of the FIG Code of Discipline. This decision underscores the federation’s shared responsibility in ensuring compliance with regulations and maintaining integrity in all competitions. It is important to note that these proceedings were not intended to alter the championship results, as that matter falls outside the GEF’s jurisdiction. Instead, they focused on violations of FIG regulations, particularly the Code of Ethics, the General Judges’ Rules, and the Technical Regulations.
The GEF praised the courage of the whistleblowers who testified in the process and reaffirmed its commitment to upholding the integrity of the sport.
