With great regret, SportAccord has announced the cancellation of the 2025 edition of the SportAccord Convention, which was scheduled to take place in Istanbul, Türkiye, from June 9 to 12. Despite the challenges, the organization remains committed to the future of international sports.
Following a thorough assessment by the SportAccord Executive Committee, and in light of the changing political context and unresolved issues at the host city level, it was concluded that the convention could not proceed as planned.
Advanced preparations and global enthusiasm
Although SportAccord’s internal preparations were progressing steadily, recent political developments in Istanbul brought critical next steps for the event to a halt. The convention had generated strong enthusiasm among International Federations, partners, exhibitors, media, speakers, and delegates, and all indicators pointed to a successful edition. A diverse and engaging conference program was already in place, and a state-of-the-art venue had been secured to host the event.
Impact of political changes in Istanbul
However, last March 19, the removal of Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the subsequent appointment of Acting Mayor Nuri Aslan caused significant political disruption. As a result, several essential conditions for organizing the event could no longer be met, leading to the decision to cancel the convention.
Despite this situation, SportAccord hopes that these developments will not affect other major international events scheduled to take place in the city. The safety and welfare of all International Federations, partners, exhibitors, delegates, and staff remain the organization’s top priority.

Planning for the 2026 edition of the SportAccord Convention is already underway, with the goal of delivering an exceptional event that reflects the ambitions of the global sports movement.
