The Olympic Committee of St. Vincent and the Grenadines presented a resolution at the ANOC General Assembly on October 31 in Cascais, Portugal. This document calls for a comprehensive review of the functions of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) within the Olympic Movement, focusing on its relationship with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other key stakeholders.
The initiative proposes an assessment to better define ANOC’s roles and responsibilities and ensure that they are in sync with the IOC’s objectives. The review will also include input from athletes and regional Olympic commissions, highlighting the need for an ANOC that effectively advocates and represents the interests of National Olympic Committees (NOCs) in the IOC’s decision-making structure.
FORMATION OF A SPECIAL WORKING GROUP
To lead this review, a working group will be formed comprised of representatives from ANOCs, NOCs, regional associations and governance experts. This team will be responsible for gathering feedback from NOCs and other Olympic stakeholders, and will examine how the ANOC’s operational priorities align with the movement’s overall objectives.
The resolution suggests the creation of a framework for collaboration and representation that clearly defines the ANOC’s role as an advocate and supporter of NOCs. It seeks to ensure that the challenges and contributions of these committees are properly represented to the IOC, while maintaining ANOC’s relevance in supporting NOCs.
IMPROVEMENTS IN TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Another key focus is ANOC’s commitment to transparency and accountability. The resolution highlights the importance of ANOC’s operations complying with ethical and good governance principles, and that its strategic objectives contribute to the long-term sustainability of the Olympic Movement.
To strengthen this approach, greater accountability will be promoted in ANOC-IOC interactions so that decisions and strategies are consistent with Olympic ideals and the continued development of sport worldwide.
PRESENTATION OF RESULTS AND ACTION PLAN
Once the review process is completed, the findings and recommendations will be presented at the next ANOC General Assembly. This step will allow the NOCs to review and approve a new framework for collaboration with the IOC, with the goal of consolidating a relationship in which ANOC plays a significant role for the benefit of the Olympic movement.
The resolution also states that ANOC will maintain a commitment to ongoing engagement with stakeholders, periodically evaluating the effectiveness of its role in the movement.
