The EOC celebrates a decade of the historic European Games in Baku

The European Olympic CommitteeEOC– celebrated the tenth anniversary of the opening ceremony of the first European Games, held in Baku in 2015, in collaboration with the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan. This event marked a historic milestone as the first Continental Games held in Europe, bringing together nearly 6,000 athletes from 50 countries who competed in 20 sports.

EOC President Spyros Capralos, who chaired the Baku 2015 Coordination Commission, enthusiastically recalled this historic moment for European sport, highlighting the energy and passion that permeated every corner of the city during the event.

A legacy that inspires future editions

Capralos noted that Baku 2015 set a high standard for the European Games, a level that has been maintained in subsequent editions in Minsk 2019 and Krakow-Malopolska 2023. “The legacy of Baku continues to inspire, proving that the most ambitious dreams can come true with courage and determination.”

In addition, the EOC President thanked the people of Azerbaijan for their commitment to sport and for leaving an indelible mark on Olympic history. “Thank you for believing in the power of sport and for marking a turning point in the history of the European Games.”

Innovation contest

To celebrate this anniversary, the National Olympic Committee of Azerbaijan has launched the “Baku 2015 – AI & Sport Innovation Contest.” This contest invites young creators from across the continent to design original graphics or videos using artificial intelligence, reflecting the spirit and legacy of Baku 2015. The contest will be open until July 12, and the winner will receive a special three-day trip to Baku, which will include guided tours of the European Games venues and the city’s main attractions.

Since its first edition, the European Games have established themselves as the continent’s premier multi-sport event, bringing together Europe’s best athletes. In Krakow-Małopolska 2023, more than 100 qualifying opportunities for the 2024 Paris Olympics were offered, highlighting the relevance of this event on the international sporting scene.
