Hockey took center stage at the recent World Fair Play Awards 2024, held in Budapest, Hungary, by receiving dual recognition for its commitment to fair play values. The Thailand Hockey Association (THA) and Paraguayan international umpire Victoria Pazos were awarded the Fair Play World Diploma in the categories “Willi Daume – Promotion of Fair Play” and “Jean Borotra – Career in Fair Play,” respectively—honors granted by the International Fair Play Committee (CIFP).

Both nominations were submitted by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in recognition of their exemplary work promoting sport as a tool for inclusion, solidarity, and respect. The continued support from Thailand in developing hockey in Cambodia, along with Pazoscommitment on and off the field, have been seen as models of the fair play spirit, much needed in modern sport.

Honors that reflect the true spirit of hockey

The Thailand Hockey Association has played a key role in the development of Cambodian hockey at the continental level, providing support in training, infrastructure, and competition. Thanks to this collaboration, athletes of all ages and genders in Cambodia have been able to represent their country with pride, gain international experience, and improve their skills. As noted by its president, Dato Seri Chaiyapak Siriwat, this award reaffirms their commitment to a solidarity-driven vision of sport, where growth knows no borders, and cooperation between nations is part of hockey’s very essence.

For her part, Victoria Pazos was honored for her outstanding career as an umpire and for her work as coach of Paraguay’s Hockey ID team. Her efforts have been a strong example of inclusion and social commitment, creating opportunities for athletes with intellectual disabilities and fostering respect and equity. In her thank-you remarks, Pazos acknowledged the support of national and international institutions, stating that this recognition motivates her to continue growing hockey in her country and region. For the FIH, these awards confirm that hockey not only competes, but also leads with values.
