Updating knowledge, revisiting standards and addressing the challenges shaping the present is essential in any profession. In sport—and particularly in the officiating sector—this constant process of renewal is indispensable. Weightlifting is no exception. For decades, the sport was perceived as a male-dominated field, with men occupying most positions of technical authority. That dynamic, however, is changing significantly.

From 12 to 14 December 2025, Rome hosted the EWF ITOs Seminar and Workshop, a continental meeting where more than 25 International Technical Officials from 21 countries gathered to update procedures and exchange experiences. The theoretical sessions were led by Danish Tina Beiter, the EWF First Vice President and Chairwoman of the Technical Committee, a key figure in the modernisation of European officiating. Beiter not only led the theoretical programme: she also served as President of the Jury during the practical phase, held in conjunction with the Italian National Championships, the highest and most responsible officiating role in a competition.

This shared leadership was reinforced by the presence of Denis Offermann, a Cypriot member of the EWF Technical Committee, who supported Beiter in technical supervision. On the field of play, overall coordination was entrusted to Italian Annalisa Disogra, the Competition Director and an experienced official at European and World Championships. Three women leading an event that symbolises a profound cultural transformation within the sport.

The structural transformation of weightlifting in Europe

What took place in Rome represents far more than a seminar: it is a visible sign of the structural change taking place in European weightlifting. The EWF has placed equality and modernisation at the core of its strategic priorities, an approach strengthened under the leadership of President Dr Astrit Hasani, whose vision has driven new internal dynamics, expanded female participation at all levels and reinforced the professionalisation of officiating. His tenure is marked by a clear intention to open pathways, renew structures and promote a more diverse ecosystem capable of meeting current challenges.

Thanks to this momentum, more women are stepping into influential roles, shaping technical criteria and making decisions that mould the sport’s future. What once seemed exceptional is now part of a strong and growing trend. The Rome seminar reflected precisely that: a way of working that is more open, more prepared and more aligned with the global evolution of weightlifting.
