The International Handball Federation (IHF) has announced a strategic collaboration with DEKRA, making it the Official Referee Partner for the IHF Men’s and Women’s World Championships until at least 2027. This agreement, managed by SPORTFIVE, strengthens handball’s position on the global sports stage and ensures substantial support for referees, key figures in upholding fair play and sports integrity.

The partnership will take effect during the 2025 Men’s World Championship, scheduled to take place from January 14 to February 2 in Denmark, Croatia, and Norway. Following this, DEKRA will also be present at the Women’s World Championship in November and December 2025, to be held in Germany and the Netherlands. This support will extend to the 2027 editions, solidifying a partnership that promises to benefit both the sport and the German brand.

DEKRAS VALUES IN REFEERING

DEKRA, a company renowned for its technical expertise and commitment to safety, finds a perfect parallel in the role of handball referees: “Fair play and rule compliance are essential both in sports and daily life,” stated Stan Zurkiewicz, DEKRA’s CEO. In addition to appearing on referee uniforms and tournament advertising, the brand will emphasize its association with values like neutrality, precision, and expertise—pillars it shares with refereeing.

IHF President Dr. Hassan Moustafa underscored the importance of this alliance: “We are confident that fans will recognize our shared dedication to quality. This collaboration will not only benefit handball but also enhance DEKRA’s visibility in key sports markets,” he said.

A MAJOR IMPACT ON HANDBALL

The reach of this partnership goes beyond the arenas. According to Uta Leitner, DEKRA’s Executive Vice President of Communications, the championships will provide a unique opportunity to connect with millions of viewers, particularly in Europe, where handball enjoys a strong following. This commitment enhances handball’s relevance as one of the world’s most dynamic sports while reinforcing key values like integrity and precision, as highlighted by Robert Müller von Vultejus, SPORTFIVE’s Chief Growth Officer.

Through this partnership, the IHF, DEKRA, and SPORTFIVE set a precedent for the growth and professionalization of handball. By spotlighting referees as essential figures in promoting fair play, this collaboration elevates the sport’s international visibility and strengthens its global standing.
