Starting on Saturday, July 28, Roland Garros, one of the iconic venues of world tennis, will host the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. This edition will be the seventh time in history that the Olympic Gold is contested on a clay venue, something that has not happened since Barcelona 1992.
There are 64 places available for the Paris 2024 men’s team, of which the ATP ranking will be in charge of defining 56 of them through its last update -prior to the Olympics- on June 13, as long as they comply with the different conditions and prerogatives . For example, the obligation to have attended two Davis Cup or the Billie Jean-King Cup calls in recent years.
The remaining places are filled by the champion of the Asian Games (Zhizhen Zhang), one for the champion of the African Games (Moez Echargui) and one for the champion and runner-up of the Pan American Games (Facundo Díaz and Tomás Barrios). The places that are still available are granted to a country without representation and invitations reserved by the ITF, which are distributed to tennis players whose merit makes them worthy of participating in the most important sporting event.
Each country has 12 places, six for women and six for men, of which only four of each sex can participate in the individual draws, two entries in double draws and only one entry in mixed draws.
THE TOP 10 THAT EXCITE PARIS
The rings event looks attractive for the best tennis players in the world. Novak Djokovic (1st) answered some questions to ATP Media and said that “he hopes to arrive well and be with the best”, also ensuring that “having Paris before the Olympic Games is good”.
For his part, the Italian Jannick Sinner (2nd) is already thinking about the Games: “It only happen every four years! They are part of my main objectives”. He also referred to his performance on the Paris surface: “I feel better on hard courts, which doesn’t mean I’m not good on dirt”. Carlos Alcaraz (3rd), the first Spanish racket, only thinks about the podium. “For me it is a dream to win gold in Paris. It is one of the greatest things in sport in general”, which he declared as his biggest objective in 2024.
On the other hand is Rafa Nadal, one of the great figures in the world of tennis who, a few days ago, confirmed his intention to participate in the doubles with Carlos Alcaraz. “If nothing strange happens, we will play. We can make a good couple and aspire to beautiful things.” Rafa can qualify for the Olympic event thanks to the places given to those who have been gold and/or Grand Slam champions.
The deadline for the National Olympic Confederations (NOC) to confirm their participants in Paris 2024 is July 8, but it is most likely that the places will be filled by the end of June.
