The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) concluded its two-day Gender Equality 2025 Seminar held at the Empire Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan, a few days ago. The event brought together representatives from 43 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and concluded with a call to action to promote gender equality in Asian sport. Under the leadership of Valerie Tarazi, chair of the OCA Gender Equality Committee, the seminar highlighted the importance of sustaining efforts in this area and setting clear goals for NOCs.
During the seminar, four main priorities for advancing gender equity were identified: sustaining current efforts, providing greater support to NOCs, developing leadership programs for women, and ensuring the integration of these initiatives into the Asian Games. In addition, NOCs were urged to achieve 30% female participation and to strengthen women’s leadership roles in sport.
Valerie Tarazi highlighted the global impact these actions can have, stating, “We can set the standard around the world. Let’s create the way for us to ‘Watch Her Shine’.”
Participation of 43 NOCs and support from prominent leaders
The seminar, with the theme “Watch Her Shine,” was attended by 95 representatives from 43 NOCs. Among the attendees was the special support of His Royal Highness Prince Sufri Bolkiah of Brunei, who stressed the importance of gender equality in Asian sport.
The event was closed by His Royal Highness Prince Feisal Al Hussein, IOC Executive Board member, who emphasized that “gender equality is not an option, it is a necessity”.
Recognitions and next steps towards equality
At the end of the seminar, all participants received certificates of recognition from the OCA, marking a significant step towards gender equality in Asian sport. This event reinforces the OCA’s commitment to promoting equity and women’s leadership in sports.
