The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) joined National Olympic Committees (NOCs) around the world this Sunday to celebrate the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace (IDSDP). This day highlights the transformative role of sport as a catalyst for social inclusion, unity, and peace.
The theme chosen for the 2025 edition of IDSDP was “Leveling the playing field: sport for social inclusion.” This slogan aims to challenge stereotypes, promote equal opportunities, and foster inclusive sport for all, regardless of background or circumstances.
GLOBAL ACTIVITIES TO CELEBRATE IDSDP
Around the world, National Olympic Committees carried out various activities to commemorate this day. These initiatives included community sports festivals, educational activities, and youth engagement programs. These actions aimed to involve communities and highlight the positive impact of sport on society.
IDSDP has become a key platform to promote values such as equality, inclusion, and peace, using sport as a tool to overcome social and cultural barriers.
ANOC’S MESSAGE ON SOCIAL INCLUSION
ANOC President Robin Mitchell emphasized the importance of sport in a global context marked by conflict and division. According to Mitchell, “At a time when the world continues to face conflict and division, sport remains a beacon for hope and unity.” He also highlighted that sport has the power to bring communities together, break down barriers, and inspire positive change.
Mitchell praised the work of NOCs in creating a fairer and more inclusive society, ensuring that everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to participate and thrive through sport.
SPORT AS A TOOL FOR SOCIAL CHANGE
The International Day of Sport for Development and Peace not only celebrated the impact of sport on people’s lives but also sought to inspire governments, organizations, and communities to invest in inclusive sports initiatives. These actions are essential to ensure that sport is accessible to all and becomes a driver of social change.
