After the 142nd session of the International Olympic Committee held in Paris the Argentine, Gerardo Werthein, was appointed as the new vice president of the sports entity, receiving 78 votes in favor and 11 against to take one of the most important positions in the organization responsible for promoting Olympic sports worldwide.
Werthein was president of the Argentine Olympic Committee from 2009 to 2021, leaving the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires 2018 as one of the great milestones of his tenure. Since 2011, he has been a part of the IOC, serving as head of the Digital and Technology Commission, being one of the 10 executive members of this space.
Since April 2024, Gerardo has held the position of Argentine ambassador to the United States, something the IOC viewed favorably given that the next Olympic Games will be held in Los Angeles, and his position at the embassy will allow him to closely monitor the development of the preparations for the 2028 Olympics.
Upon his appointment as vice president, Werthein said, “It is a pride; it is related to the mission of making a better world through sport and promoting peace.” He also added, “It has to do with everything I have done in my life related to sports.”
Werthein will support Thomas Bach, president of the IOC, until March 2025, when the former Olympic fencing champion will step down from the presidency of the International Olympic Committee. This gives greater importance to his role as vice president in light of the upcoming presidential transition.
