The 3×3 basketball roster is now complete for Paris 2024. With the completion of the last Pre-Olympic of the discipline, held between May 16 and 20 in Debrecen, Hungary, the places for the Olympic Games that begin in 100 more days were closed. The urban sport turned professional, which mixes the best of the street with traditional basketball, is gaining more and more followers in the world.

For four days the biggest attraction in the FIBA world was the Pre-Olympic, which brought together the best countries of each gender in the last instance to qualify for Paris. France, Lithuania and Poland got the last tickets to the men’s tournament, which will also feature Serbia, the USA, China, Latvia and the Netherlands.

For the women’s team, Germany, Canada and Spain qualified in Debrecen (with a spectacular ‘game winner’ with his back to the basket as the main highlight of the entire tournament). They joined the squad that already had China, the United States, France, Azerbaijan and Australia.

Born in the streets as a short form of playing basketball, which mixes the skill necessary to perform in small spaces, 3×3 basketball will be one of the four urban sports present in Paris. It will be held in La Concorde, sharing the stage with breaking, BMX freestyle and skateboarding.

It will be the second time for the discipline in the Olympic Games. He made his debut at Tokyo 2020, three years after the International Olympic Committee approved his incorporation. Before the Olympic event in Japan, of course, it had been successfully tested at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore 2010, Nanjing 2014 and Buenos Aires 2018.

THE 3X3 MOVES AROUND THE WORLD

Since 2012, FIBA got professionally and definitively into 3×3 basketball, with the start of the World Tour that has been played continuously until today. Motivated by the IOC’s call in 2007 to international federations in search of innovative proposals for future events and after the aforementioned inclusion in Singapore 2010, the governing body of world basketball joined the organization of an increasingly professional urban sport. .

3×3 is simple and flexible enough to be played anywhere and by anyone. All you need is a basket, half court and six players. Events can be played in both outdoor and indoor locations in iconic venues. To, in this way, bring basketball closer to the people,” explains FIBA on its website. “The rules are very simple and designed to make 3×3 a fast, spectacular and exciting sport.”

The growth of this sport over time is so great that the 2024 World Tour will have 17 stages with the last one, in which the champions are defined, in Hong Kong, as announced by FIBA on May 16. The best 11 countries in the season ranking qualify for this event. Seat 12 will be played in a play in between the local team and the unclassified team that has achieved the most victories between the Challenger Tour and the World Tour.

“The 13th edition of the FIBA 3×3 World Tour Final in Hong Kong, China, is a testament to the city’s growing importance in the 3×3 community and its ability to host world-class sporting events,” argued Alex Sánchez, General Director of FIBA 3×3.

On November 23 and 24, the final date of the World Tour will be held, a tour around the world for the professional urban sport of basketball.
