The city of Los Angeles is preparing to host the Olympic Games for the third time in its history, a milestone that marks the start of the countdown to 2028. To mark this anniversary, the organizing committee—LA28—has released the first preview of the Olympic competition schedule, while the PlayLA program has surpassed one million registrations, establishing itself as one of the great legacies leading up to the Games.
Reynold Hoover, executive director of LA28, highlighted the importance of this moment: “We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this exact moment, three years before the third Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Today we celebrate both the million registrations in the PlayLA program and the first glimpse of the competition schedule, which has been designed so that the world’s best athletes can compete in our city.”
An Olympic schedule designed for all audiences
For the first time in nearly three decades, the Olympic Games are returning to the United States with a schedule that seeks to satisfy both local and international audiences. The schedule includes 844 ticketed events and has been developed in collaboration with Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), International Federations (IFs), and the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Among the main highlights of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic calendar are:
- The opening ceremony will take place on Friday, shared between the LA Memorial Coliseum and the 2028 Stadium in Inglewood.
- The closing ceremony will be held on Sunday, also at the Coliseum.
- Athletics will be held during the first week of the Games.
- Swimming will take place in the second week.
- The marathon will remain on the last weekend of the Olympic event.
First medals at LA28
The triathlon will be responsible for inaugurating the Olympic medal table at Venice Beach, one of the city’s most iconic locations.
Other highlights of the calendar include:
- Competition day 15, with 16 gold and bronze medals awarded in team sports and the finals of 19 individual sports, including swimming.
- Swimming will bring the competitions at the 2028 Stadium, considered one of the most modern and advanced venues in the world, to a close before the closing ceremony at the LA Memorial Coliseum.
The schedule, which will continue to evolve in the coming months, has been designed to offer the greatest variety and excitement in the history of the Games.
PlayLA, an Olympic legacy for the youth of Los Angeles
The PlayLA program, promoted by LA28 in collaboration with the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and the International Olympic Committee, has reached one million registrations. This initiative, with an investment of up to $160 million, offers quality, affordable, and inclusive sports activities for children and young people aged 3 to 17.
PlayLA allows participants to enjoy more than 40 Olympic and adapted sports, including swimming, athletics, boxing, flag football, judo, para swimming, para athletics, para surfing, and sitting volleyball, among others. The goal is to ensure that all children, regardless of their abilities, have access to sports and Olympic values.
