The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has approved, through a postal ballot, the nomination of Tony Estanguet, three-time Olympic champion in canoeing and the man responsible for the successful organization of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, for election as a member of the IOC. The election will take place during the 144th IOC Session, which will be held in Greece from March 18 to 21, 2025.
Estanguet, 46, was president of the Paris 2024 Organizing Committee and will be presented as an Independent Individual Member, in line with the recommendation of the IOC Commission for the Election of Members and as stipulated in Rule 16.1.1. of the Olympic Charter.
SPECIAL RULE FOR THE ELECTION OF MEMBERS
Rule 16.1.1. allows for the election of up to seven IOC members in special cases, without specific requirements of nationality or membership of a National Olympic Committee. This highlights the relevance of Estanguet’s nomination, which will be voted on by the members at the next session.
The process also includes the re-election of 10 members reaching the age limit, the extension of the mandate of one member, the change of status of two current members and the election of two honorary members.
PROPOSALS FROM THE IOC EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
The decision to nominate Estanguet follows proposals made at the IOC Executive Committee meeting in December 2024. This group of decisions seeks to ensure continuity of experience and leadership within the IOC, in addition to bringing new outstanding profiles to the body.
The 144th IOC session, to be held in Greece, promises to be a crucial event for the Olympic organization. During this session, not only the incorporation of Estanguet will be decided, but also other important measures that will mark the course of the Olympic Movement.
