Known as one of the fastest courses in the world, the Valencia Marathon has gained notoriety among athletics enthusiasts. This event, set to take place on Sunday, December 1, 2024, brings together an elite group of international runners in search of historic times. While not a Major, Valencia has become a must-attend event, with five of the top 20 men’s times and three of the top 20 women’s times recorded on its flat and strategic course.

In recent years, this Spanish city has witnessed memorable performances, such as Kelvin Kiptum’s debut in 2022, where he ran an astonishing 2:01:53, at the time the third-fastest time in history. This year, all eyes will be on other athletes looking to leave their mark on this legendary race.

ATHLETES TO WATCH

Among the top male contenders is Ethiopian Sisay Lemma, who posted an impressive 2:01:48 in 2023, making him the fourth-fastest runner in history. He arrives this year with the momentum of his victory in Boston, aiming to defend his title on the streets of Valencia. Another big name is Kenenisa Bekele, a legend in athletics with multiple Olympic and World Championship golds. At 40 years old, he continues to compete at the highest level after his podium finish in London.

In the women’s category, the absence of Amane Beriso opens the door for new contenders. Megertu Alemu, with a personal best of 2:16:34 and consecutive podium finishes in London, aims to establish herself in Valencia. Her compatriot Hiwot Gebrekidan, third in 2023 with a time of 2:17:59, also aims to take the lead in this edition. With a competitive field, the race promises excitement both on the asphalt and in marathon history.
