The volleyball world is counting down to the 39th International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) World Congress, which will be held in Porto, Portugal, from November 15-17, 2024. This edition will bring together delegates and members of the global volleyball community at a decisive moment for the organization, as the election of a new FIVB president for the period 2024-2032 will take place. In addition to the presidency, several key positions on the Board of Administration will be filled, with the aim of consolidating the FIVB’s leadership structure.
The nomination process for these roles has followed updated governance standards. From March 15 until July 15, 2024, interested parties had the opportunity to submit their nominations. At the close of nominations, Fabio Azevedo was the only candidate for the position of president, after passing an integrity assessment by the FIVB Electoral Advisory Committee.
BOARD RENEWAL AND DIVERSITY
On this occasion, the election will also include the selection of representatives for minority gender groups on the Board, underlining the FIVB’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in its governance. This initiative aims to ensure that all voices are represented at leadership levels of the organization, paving the way for a more equitable approach to decision-making.
Azevedo, currently the FIVB’s director general and a resident of Switzerland, has a nearly 30-year career in volleyball administration. He has played a central role in directing the operations of the FIVB and has been a pillar in the sustainable development of the sport globally. If elected, Azevedo intends to lead the FIVB into a new era of growth and stability.

THE LEGACY OF ARY S. GRAÇA F°
The election will mark the end of the tenure of Ary S. Graça F°, who has presided over the FIVB since 2012. During his tenure, Graça F° implemented important reforms that have strengthened the governance structure of the organization and boosted the development of volleyball in all regions of the world. A detailed report of his achievements will be released at the start of the Congress in recognition of his contribution.
The FIVB Congress in Porto will not only be a transition point in leadership, but will also reinforce the organization’s commitment to ethical and equitable governance. The voting structure has been designed to reflect these values, allowing delegates from the global volleyball family to express their vision for the future of the federation.
THE FUTURE VISION OF FIVB
As delegates prepare for this historic meeting in Porto, the day on November 16 is shaping up to be a pivotal moment in defining the direction of international volleyball. Under Azevedo’s potential leadership, the FIVB will seek to consolidate its growth and foster an environment of inclusion and sustainability, strengthening its position in the global sporting landscape and ensuring that volleyball continues to be a driver of social change and development.
