World Triathlon President Antonio Arimany shared the highlights of the Executive Board meeting held in Madrid on January 18 and 19. This meeting, key to defining the bases for the 2025 season, was attended by members of the Spanish federation and representatives of the international organization. Arimany thanked all the participants for their commitment and the host, the Spanish Triathlon Federation, for its hospitality.

Among the attendees, the participation of Marisol Casado, current president of World Triathlon, and Arimany himself, as president-elect, stood out. During the meeting, strategic issues were discussed and important decisions were made for the future of triathlon globally.

DECISIONS OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD

One of the main points was the approval of the minutes of the previous meeting, followed by an analysis of the event structure. The president of the Spanish Federation, José Hidalgo, presented proposals from four companies for an external audit. After a thorough review, it was decided to engage the services of Deloitte.

In addition, a report was presented on the achievements of the 2024 media strategy and plans for 2025. Olalla Cernuda, head of media and communications, noted, “The results have been excellent and we are ready for further growth this year.”

COMPETITION UPDATES

Another crucial topic was the relationship with private organizers. Kris Gemmell, head of marketing and commercial, reported on partnerships with PTO, Supertri, Challenge, IRONMAN and XTerra. Enrique Quesada, results director, presented the updates to the World Triathlon competition rules, which will be officially communicated to the national federations next week.

In terms of events, Gergely Markus, sports director, addressed issues related to the 2028 Paralympic and Olympic Games in Los Angeles, highlighting efforts to increase the number of medal events. Progress on the contract for the Wollongong finals and the appointment of new qualification officials were also discussed.

FINANCIAL ASPECTS AND INTERNAL MANAGEMENT

The Executive Board approved the 2024 financial statements and reviewed the 2025 budget. Antonio Arimany requested adjustments to include an additional Board meeting in July and to cover the costs of selecting a new Secretary General. Elevate Talent is already working on the selection process.

Also reported was the departure of key employees and new additions, such as Georgia Lynch, who becomes a full-time employee in the anti-doping and legal department.

INCLUSION STANDARDS AND DIGITAL ADVANCEMENTS

The EB approved new eligibility criteria for transgender athletes, which will be published soon. Prior to their dissemination, an internal memo will be sent to national federations. “These changes reflect our commitment to inclusion and equity in sport,” commented Arimany.

On the other hand, Fergus Murray, head of broadcasting and IT, outlined progress on digital projects, including the revamp of the website. Although the development has not met initial expectations, urgent changes are being implemented to raise its quality.

TRIATHLON’S NEXT STEPS

The meeting also addressed the selection of broadcast services, approving Mediapro for WTCS Hamburg, and the establishment of new procedures for the World Triathlon tribunals. In addition, the next National Federations Open Hours, scheduled for February 12, were announced, where updates on competition rules and the 2025-2028 continental development model will be explained in depth.

World Triathlon enters 2025 with a clear vision and a focus on inclusion, digital development and financial transparency, ensuring a year full of opportunities for triathlon globally.
