The Caribbean Association of National Olympic Committees (CANOC) has orchestrated a memorable cocktail event on a boat with stunning views of the Eiffel Tower, sponsored by FPLV, COP and Quality Media, coinciding with the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In an exclusive interview with Sportsin, Keith Joseph, President of CANOC, shared insights into the organization’s goals and the significance of such gatherings.
Keith Joseph emphasized the impressive achievements of Caribbean athletes over the years, particularly highlighting Jamaica. “What we have been attempting to do in these 21 years is to utilize sport not only for building character and complete individuals but also to unify our regions,” he stated. Joseph underscored the diversity of the Caribbean, noting the contrast between small islands with populations of 45,000 to 50,000 and larger nations like Cuba or Dominican Republic with 11 million people.
He believes that by leveraging their shared history and past, Caribbean countries can address various issues—economically, politically, socially, and culturally. “Sport, as Nelson Mandela says, facilitates harmony, brings people together, and builds society,” Joseph remarked. He emphasized that the strength of some nations can support the weaknesses of others, showcasing that sporting progress and excellence can inspire people to believe that “the sky’s the limit.”
The primary aim of these reunions is to foster face-to-face interactions among CANOC members who usually don’t have the chance to meet in person. “Nothing beats a face-to-face, sharing a smile, thoughts, and hugging each other. It reminds us of who we are and what is possible. This brings us together and says, ‘Hey, we are in this together, and we are a team,’” Joseph explained.
The event not only serves as a celebration of Caribbean unity and sporting excellence but also as a reminder of the collaborative spirit that drives the region towards a promising future.
