The echoes of the successful Santiago 2023 Pan American Games have not yet ended and the Chilean sports authorities surprised with an announcement that occurred last Friday: the International Cycling Federation (UCI), through its president David Lappartient, confirmed that the Championship The 2025 Track Cycling World Championship was awarded to Chile and it will be the first time that the best cyclists on the planet compete in the Peñalolén Park Velodrome.

The efforts came from South Korea, where the last Winter Youth Olympic Games – Gangwon 2024 – were held and the principle of agreement was consummated, said Miguel Ángel Mújica, president of the Chilean Olympic Committee. “Everything happened very quickly, when San Juan, Argentina, was the venue for the World Cup. They immediately looked at our country for its excellence in the organization of sporting events and it also allowed us to launch ‘The Legacy of the Pan American Games’, so we gave ourselves a short deadline and now we are formally announcing it.”

“This announcement is historic”

The event will take place in October 2025 and will bring together more than 400 athletes from 45 countries, turning Santiago de Chile into a unique setting, with the responsibility of meeting the high standards required by the competition. To this end, the Minister of Sports, Jaime Pizarro, pledged the support of the government of President Gabriel Boric, pointing out that “this announcement is historic, it reaffirms that sport is a fundamental pillar for our country and, therefore, we are going to generate all the conditions to consecrate this World Cup as the best. Experience shows us that supporting and investing in sport unites our people, we all go for the same goal, that is valued and appreciated.”

The World Cycling Championship has guaranteed the presence of the best velodrome athletes and, in addition, allows Santiago de Chile to be a valid option for multi-sport events, where the excellence of its athletes is guaranteed.
