The 33rd AIDA World Apnea Championship is about to begin in the city of Ajaccio, Corsica, France. From September 3rd to 15th, 2024, the world’s best freedivers will gather to compete in a series of disciplines that challenge human limits. This event will not only be a test of endurance and skill but also a celebration of the sport at its finest.
During the championship, athletes will compete in four depth disciplines, each with its own unique characteristics and challenges:
Constant Weight (CWT): In this discipline, freedivers must descend and ascend by swimming with fins or a monofin, without the assistance of a rope or other propulsion means. It is a test of technique and strength, with records currently held by Alexey Malchanov and Alessia Zecchini.
Constant Weight without Fins (CNF): Here, athletes must use only their arms and legs to descend and ascend, without fins or the aid of a rope. This discipline is known for its physical and mental demands. In this category, Kateryna Sadurska and William Trubridge hold the records.
Bifins Constant Weight (CWTB): Similar to Constant Weight, but in this discipline, freedivers use bifins instead of a monofin. It requires great skill in using bifins to achieve maximum efficiency in the water. The world records are held by Alexey Molchanov and Alenka Artnik.
Free Immersion (FIM): In this discipline, freedivers descend and ascend by pulling on a rope, without using fins or other propulsion means. It is a test of strength and breath control. The historical records are held by Fatima Korok and Petar Klovar.
The Setting: Ajaccio, Corsica The competition will take place approximately one mile off the coast of Ajaccio, in crystal-clear waters with temperatures between 22 and 25 °C and a depth of up to 160 meters—ideal conditions for athletes to push their limits and set new records.
Official training sessions will be held on September 4th and 5th, and the competition will be broadcast live starting on September 6th, 2024, on AIDA’s YouTube channel. All information about the event schedule, start lists, and results will be available on the official website of the AIDA Corsica 2024 Depth World Championship.
